A commanding full-length portrait of Sir John Sinclair in military uniform, painted by the Scottish master Henry Raeburn.
Sir Henry Raeburn, the pre-eminent Scottish portraitist of his era, captures Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster in this full-length military portrait. Sinclair, a notable politician and agricultural improver, is depicted in the uniform of the Rothesay and Caithness Fencibles, a regiment he raised himself. The composition places the subject against a dramatic, atmospheric backdrop that suggests the rugged terrain of the Scottish Highlands.
Raeburn employs a confident, painterly technique that prioritises the character of the sitter over minute detail. The scarlet of the military tunic provides a visual anchor, contrasting with the dark, muted tones of the tartan and the stormy sky. Sinclair stands with a hand on his hip, holding his plumed bonnet, a pose that conveys both authority and a sense of ease. The artist uses light to model the face and figure, creating a sense of physical presence that was a hallmark of his practice.
This work is characteristic of Raeburn's ability to combine the formal requirements of aristocratic portraiture with a direct, honest observation of the individual. The textures of the uniform, from the heavy wool of the plaid to the metallic sheen of the sword hilt, are rendered with broad, effective brushwork. By avoiding excessive ornamentation, Raeburn focuses the viewer on the sitter's steady gaze and upright posture. This portrait remains a definitive example of late eighteenth-century Scottish painting, reflecting the intersection of military duty and landed status in the period. The work is currently held in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland, where it continues to be studied for its technical mastery and its representation of Highland identity during the Napoleonic era.
