A detailed 1738 copperplate engraving by Jacobus Houbraken, featuring a portrait of Sir William Temple framed by ornate rococo-style decorative elements.
This engraving by Jacobus Houbraken depicts the English statesman and diplomat Sir William Temple. Produced in 1738, the work is a fine example of the portraiture style prevalent in the eighteenth century, where the subject is presented within an elaborate, decorative cartouche. Houbraken, a Dutch engraver, was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to render texture and light through the medium of copperplate engraving.
The central portrait shows Temple with the flowing hair and attire characteristic of the late seventeenth century. He is framed by a rococo-inspired border that incorporates floral motifs and allegorical figures. Below the main portrait, the composition includes a smaller scene featuring a bird with an olive branch, alongside classical figures and books, which serve as symbols of Temple's diplomatic career and his literary contributions. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of depth and volume, particularly in the drapery of the subject's clothing and the sculptural quality of the surrounding frame.
Houbraken's work was often commissioned for historical publications, such as Thomas Birch's 'Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain'. These prints were intended to document the appearance of significant figures for a contemporary audience. The inclusion of the inscription 'In the Collection of John Temple Esq.' indicates the provenance of the original painting from which this engraving was derived. The print demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with Dutch printmaking during this period, balancing the formal requirements of portraiture with the decorative sensibilities of the time.
