Michelangelo's 'The Brazen Serpent' is a fresco from the Sistine Chapel ceiling, depicting a scene from the Book of Numbers. The work exemplifies High Renaissance art through its dynamic composition and expressive figures.
This fresco is part of Michelangelo's extensive decoration of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, commissioned by Pope Julius II. Completed between 1508 and 1512, the ceiling presents a complex system of decoration featuring scenes from the Book of Genesis, along with prophets, sibyls, and the ancestors of Christ. Michelangelo's work is a cornerstone of High Renaissance art, demonstrating his mastery of anatomy, perspective, and narrative composition. The Sistine Chapel is located within the Vatican City. 'The Brazen Serpent' depicts a scene from the Book of Numbers, in which God sends venomous snakes to punish the Israelites for their complaints against Him and Moses. As people die from snake bites, Moses prays for deliverance. God instructs Moses to mount a bronze serpent on a pole; those who look upon it are healed. Michelangelo portrays the chaos and suffering of the Israelites, with figures writhing in agony, succumbing to the snake bites, or seeking salvation by gazing at the bronze serpent. The composition is dynamic, with a mass of intertwined bodies expressing a range of emotions from despair to hope.

Had his nose broken by a classmate at thirteen, carved David from a marble block two other sculptors gave up on, and painted the Sistine ceiling standing up.
