A classical portrait by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, 'Sitting Young Man' features two nude male figures in a serene, muted landscape, reflecting the artist's academic training and interest in classical ideals.
Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1783-1853) was a Danish painter, known as the father of Danish painting. He is considered a major influence on the development of art in Denmark. Eckersberg studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and later with Jacques-Louis David in Paris. He became a professor at the Academy in 1818 and served as its director from 1827 to 1829. Eckersberg's work is characterised by its realism, attention to detail, and classical ideals. He painted portraits, historical subjects, and landscapes. His influence can be seen in the work of many later Danish artists. 'Sitting Young Man' depicts two nude male figures in a classical setting. One figure sits on a stone block, draped in fabric, while the other leans against a stone structure, holding a staff. The background features a serene, muted vista of land and water under a pale sky. The painting's composition and subject matter reflect Eckersberg's interest in classical art and his academic training.
