A sketch by Vincent van Gogh, extracted from a letter to his brother Theo, depicting the Yellow House in Arles where he lived and worked. The sketch provides a glimpse into the artist's living and working environment during a productive period of his career.
This sketch, extracted from a letter written by Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo, depicts the artist's house in Arles, France, known as the Yellow House. Van Gogh rented four rooms in the building, located at Place Lamartine, from May 1888. He envisioned it as a communal space for artists, and it was here that Paul Gauguin briefly joined him. The house served as both a residence and a studio where he produced some of his most recognised works. The sketch, executed in a simple, almost childlike style, shows the basic structure of the house with its distinctive facade and windows. The surrounding text, part of the letter, provides context to the drawing. The house is rendered with quick, confident lines, showing the artist's intention to convey information rather than create a detailed representation. The Yellow House was severely damaged during an Allied bombing in 1944 and was later demolished.
