This woodblock print originates from the 1814 publication 'Manga hyakujo', or 'Sketchbook of One Hundred Women', by the Japanese artist Aikawa Minwa. The work belongs to the Ukiyo-e tradition, which focused on scenes of daily life, popular culture, and the activities of common people during the Edo period. Minwa, a student of the Kano school, applied a disciplined approach to these illustrations, balancing technical precision with the observational quality typical of the era's genre studies.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels, each documenting the labour of weaving. On the left, a woman manages a spool, while the right panel depicts a weaver operating a traditional loom. The artist employs a restrained palette, using soft washes of colour to complement the clean, calligraphic ink lines. This approach allows the viewer to focus on the mechanics of the tools and the posture of the figures. The perspective is flattened, a common characteristic of Japanese printmaking that prioritises the clarity of the narrative over three-dimensional depth.
'Manga hyakujo' serves as a visual record of domestic and industrial tasks performed by women in early nineteenth-century Japan.
