A classic woodcut by M.C. Escher depicting the gradual metamorphosis of birds into fish through the mathematical process of tessellation.
Sky and Water I is a woodcut print by the Dutch artist M.C. Escher, produced in 1938. The work demonstrates the artist's fascination with the mathematical concept of tessellation, specifically the regular division of the plane. The composition features a gradual metamorphosis where birds in the upper section transform into fish in the lower section.
At the top of the image, the birds are clearly defined against a light background. As the eye moves downward, the negative space between the birds begins to take the shape of fish. By the centre of the print, the two forms exist in a state of equilibrium, sharing the same outlines. As the viewer continues to the bottom, the fish become the dominant positive forms, set against a dark background. The transition is seamless, relying on the precise interlocking of shapes to create a visual paradox.
Escher used the woodcut medium to achieve the sharp contrast required for this effect. The black and white ink creates a stark division, ensuring that the viewer focuses on the geometry of the forms rather than colour. The surrounding border of horizontal lines frames the central metamorphosis, adding a sense of containment to the fluid motion within. This piece is a primary example of Escher's ability to combine rigorous mathematical logic with artistic imagination. It invites the viewer to consider the relationship between figure and ground, as well as the nature of perception itself. The work remains a clear representation of the artist's interest in symmetry and the transformation of shapes within a two-dimensional space.
