Jacques Courtois, often known as Le Bourguignon, earned a reputation for his depictions of military conflict. This etching captures the chaotic atmosphere of a seventeenth-century skirmish. The composition is divided between the foreground, where the immediate consequences of the struggle are visible, and the distant horizon, where the engagement continues near a fortified structure.

In the foreground, the artist depicts fallen horses and soldiers, providing a stark view of the aftermath. The central group of mounted cavalrymen remains active, with one figure sounding a trumpet, adding a sense of urgency to the scene.
