A mezzotint by Wallerant Vaillant, 'Slapende Amor' depicts a sleeping Cupid as a cherubic infant. The soft texture of the mezzotint enhances the tenderness of the subject.
Wallerant Vaillant, a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker, created this mezzotint titled 'Slapende Amor'. Vaillant was one of the first artists to use the mezzotint technique, and he is credited with popularising it. He produced numerous portraits and genre scenes throughout his career, working in various European cities, including Amsterdam, Paris, and Frankfurt. 'Slapende Amor' depicts a sleeping Cupid, the Roman god of love, as a cherubic infant. The soft, velvety texture of the mezzotint medium enhances the tenderness of the subject. Cupid lies on a plush cushion, draped with fabric, creating a sense of intimacy and peace. The composition is simple, with the focus entirely on the figure of Cupid and the surrounding drapery. The use of light and shadow adds depth and dimension to the image, highlighting the delicate features of the sleeping child.
