A fine etching of a sleeping dog, rendered with precise line work and a focus on naturalistic form.
This etching, titled Slapende hond, captures a quiet moment of rest. The work displays the technical precision characteristic of late eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the texture of the dog's fur, contrasting the soft, matted coat with the sparse, open ground upon which the animal lies. The composition is minimal, focusing entirely on the subject without extraneous background elements to distract from the pose.
The inscription at the bottom indicates the collaborative nature of the production, with the artist Johannes Christiaan de Marees credited for the etching, working from a design or observation by P. Janson. The technique relies on the economy of line to convey volume and weight. The dog is depicted in a curled position, its head resting heavily on its front paws, suggesting a state of deep slumber. The shading is achieved through careful cross-hatching, particularly around the ears and the darker patches of the coat, which provides a sense of depth and physical presence.
Such studies were common in the period, often produced as part of larger series documenting domestic animals or rural life. The print demonstrates a keen observation of animal anatomy and behaviour. By stripping away the environment, the artist invites the viewer to examine the form of the dog as a singular subject. The paper remains largely unworked, creating a stark, clean aesthetic that allows the black ink to stand out with clarity. This piece is a fine example of the period's interest in naturalistic representation, executed with a disciplined hand that avoids unnecessary ornamentation.
