An abstract composition by Friedel Dzubas, featuring fluid, overlapping shapes and a balance of muted earth tones with sharp, saturated colour.
Slate is a representative example of the mature style of Friedel Dzubas, a painter associated with the Color Field movement. During the 1960s and 1970s, Dzubas moved away from the gestural brushwork of his earlier years, adopting the use of Magna, an acrylic resin paint. This medium allowed for a unique application, where colour could be thinned to a wash or applied in dense, opaque blocks.
In this composition, the viewer observes a series of irregular, floating shapes that interact across the canvas. The work avoids a central focus, instead encouraging the eye to move across the varied edges where different hues meet. The palette combines muted, earthy tones with sudden, sharp interruptions of high-chroma pigment. A deep, dark brown occupies the left side, providing a heavy anchor for the lighter, more translucent forms that drift towards the right. The application of paint varies from thin, atmospheric stains to solid, flat fields of colour.
Unlike the hard-edge abstraction of some of his contemporaries, Dzubas maintained a sense of painterly fluidity. The edges of his shapes are not strictly defined by tape or rigid geometry; rather, they appear to bleed into one another or overlap with a soft, organic quality. This approach creates a sense of spatial depth without relying on traditional perspective. The interaction between the cool, slate-like greys and the sudden burst of orange creates a tension that defines the visual experience of the piece. By balancing large, quiet areas with smaller, more active forms, the artist constructs a composition that feels both expansive and contained. The work reflects the artist's interest in the physical properties of paint and the emotional resonance of colour relationships.
