A compelling oil painting by Xu Beihong depicting the classical fable of the slave and the lion, rendered with academic precision and dramatic lighting.
Xu Beihong, a central figure in the modernisation of Chinese painting, produced this work during his formative years in Europe. The composition draws upon the classical fable of Androcles and the lion, a narrative concerning gratitude and the bond between man and beast. Xu employs a Western academic approach to anatomy and light, reflecting his rigorous training at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
The scene is set within a darkened cavern, which acts as a frame for the interaction. To the left, the lion stands in a patch of natural light, its form rendered with careful attention to muscular structure and the texture of its mane. To the right, the slave leans against the rock face, his posture suggesting exhaustion and vulnerability. The contrast between the shadow-drenched interior and the bright exterior creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into the quiet tension of the encounter.
Xu Beihong is recognised for his ability to synthesise traditional Chinese brushwork sensibilities with the technical precision of European oil painting. In this piece, the application of paint is deliberate, focusing on the play of light across the lion's fur and the slave's skin. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, keeping the focus on the emotional weight of the narrative. By choosing a subject from Western literature, Xu demonstrated his ambition to bridge cultural divides through a universal visual language. This print captures the atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, preserving the tonal shifts and the dramatic interplay of light and dark that define the composition.
