A refined stipple engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi, after a design by Elisabetta Sirani, capturing a peaceful infant in repose.
This stipple engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi depicts a young child in a state of repose. The composition is based on an original design by the Bolognese artist Elisabetta Sirani, whose work Bartolozzi frequently interpreted during his career. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the stipple method, a technique that uses dots rather than lines to create subtle tonal gradations and soft modelling of form. This approach allows for a gentle, painterly quality that is particularly effective in rendering the soft skin of the infant.
The child lies on a bed, head resting on a pillow, with drapery visible in the background. The focus remains on the quiet, naturalistic posture of the subject. Bartolozzi, who moved from Italy to London in 1764, became a member of the Royal Academy and was instrumental in popularising stipple engraving in Britain. His ability to translate the fluid lines of earlier masters into this dot-based medium brought a new level of refinement to reproductive printmaking in the eighteenth century.
This work reflects the period's interest in domestic and sentimental subjects, often derived from earlier Baroque or Renaissance compositions. The print captures a moment of stillness, with the fine texture of the engraving process providing a tactile quality to the bedclothes and the child's form. It is a clear example of the collaborative nature of print production during this era, where the engraver acted as a bridge between the original painter's vision and the wider public audience.
