A 1937 portrait by Henri Matisse featuring a reclining figure in a purple-striped robe, defined by flat planes of colour and decorative patterns.
Painted in 1937, Small Odalisque in Purple Robe captures the characteristic approach Henri Matisse took toward the odalisque theme during his later years in Nice. The subject reclines on a curved sofa, draped in a bold, purple-striped robe that dominates the visual field. Matisse employs a flattened perspective, prioritising the decorative arrangement of colour and pattern over traditional anatomical modelling. The figure is surrounded by blocks of yellow, teal, and soft blue, which create a sense of interior space without relying on conventional depth.
Matisse uses a simplified line to define the figure, allowing the flat areas of paint to interact directly. The striped fabric of the robe provides a rhythmic quality, contrasting with the solid, muted tones of the background and the sofa. The figure wears a floral-patterned blouse beneath the robe, adding another layer of visual texture to the composition. Her pose is relaxed, yet the arrangement of her limbs and the placement of her jewellery are carefully calculated to maintain the balance of the frame.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the interplay between the figure and the decorative environment. By removing unnecessary detail, Matisse focuses on the essential qualities of the scene. The colour palette is deliberate, using the contrast between the purple stripes and the teal trousers to guide the eye across the canvas. The work remains a clear example of his mature style, where the application of paint is direct and the composition is stripped of extraneous elements. It provides a view into the artist's studio practice, where the model and the surrounding objects are treated as components of a larger, unified design.
