A modernist study by Bauhaus master Oskar Schlemmer, featuring a stylised figure in a dynamic, diagonal pose.
Oskar Schlemmer, a central figure at the Bauhaus, approached the human form as a geometric entity. In this work, the figure is reduced to essential shapes, reflecting his preoccupation with the relationship between the body and the surrounding space. The diagonal orientation of the blue-clad figure creates a sense of motion, typical of Schlemmer's interest in dance and theatrical movement.
The composition prioritises the interaction of colour and form over traditional representation. The deep blue of the clothing contrasts with the warm, flesh-toned areas of the head and hand, while the dark background pushes the figure forward. Schlemmer often explored how the human body could be abstracted into a series of volumes, a concept he applied to his stage designs and paintings alike. This piece demonstrates his ability to balance technical precision with a sense of psychological tension.
Schlemmer's work during the 1920s often featured these stylised figures, which he referred to as 'stereometric' bodies. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he focused on the mechanics of posture and the spatial dynamics of the stage. This print captures the precise, calculated nature of his aesthetic, offering a glimpse into the experimental atmosphere of the Bauhaus school. The work remains a clear example of his attempt to reconcile the organic human form with the rigid, industrial logic of the modern era.
