A 1922 drypoint and etching by Wassily Kandinsky, featuring a delicate arrangement of geometric and organic forms suspended in space.
Small Worlds X is a drypoint and etching from the portfolio Kleine Welten (Small Worlds), published in 1922 by the Propyläen Verlag in Berlin. During this period, Wassily Kandinsky was teaching at the Bauhaus, and his work shifted towards a more rigorous, geometric abstraction. This print demonstrates his interest in the relationship between individual graphic elements and the surrounding void.
The composition is anchored by a central cluster of intersecting lines, grids, and organic shapes. These forms appear to float within the white space of the paper, creating a sense of suspension. Kandinsky employs a variety of mark-making techniques, including fine hatching, stippling, and precise linear strokes. These diverse textures interact to suggest movement and spatial depth without relying on traditional perspective.
Kandinsky viewed the print medium as a way to explore the autonomy of line and form. In Small Worlds X, the artist balances structured, mathematical elements with more fluid, spontaneous gestures. The work avoids representational imagery, focusing instead on the visual language of geometry and rhythm. The sparse arrangement allows each mark to function as an independent entity, contributing to the overall equilibrium of the image. The artist's signature is present in the lower margin, alongside the date, reflecting the meticulous nature of his printmaking process during his tenure at the Bauhaus.
