A Japanese woodblock print by Ohara Koson, 'Snail on the bamboo leaf' depicts a snail clinging to a bamboo stalk against a soft grey background. This work exemplifies Koson's skill in capturing naturalistic detail.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist associated with the Shin-Hanga movement, which revitalised traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock printing. Koson, originally a painter, transitioned to printmaking, becoming known for his depictions of birds and flowers (kachō-e). His work found popularity in both Japan and the West. He sometimes signed his work with the name Shōson or Hōson. 'Snail on the bamboo leaf' exemplifies Koson's skill in capturing naturalistic detail with a subdued palette. The print features a stalk of bamboo, its leaves rendered in dark green and black, set against a soft grey background. A small snail, rendered in yellow, clings to one of the leaves, adding a point of interest. The composition is simple, focusing on the delicate balance between the plant and the creature. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to evoke a sense of quiet observation.
