A winter scene in Argenteuil, France, by Claude Monet, rendered in the Impressionist style with loose brushstrokes and a focus on light and colour.
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a founder of French Impressionism, the artistic movement that shifted focus from realistic representation to capturing fleeting moments and the subjective experience of light and colour. Monet is celebrated for his series paintings, such as the water lilies at Giverny, which explored the same subject under varying conditions. His work influenced generations of artists and continues to be exhibited in museums worldwide. 'Snow at Argenteuil' depicts a winter scene in the French town of Argenteuil, where Monet lived for several years. The composition is divided into three horizontal bands: the snow-covered ground, the buildings and trees, and the overcast sky. The buildings are rendered in warm yellows and oranges, contrasting with the cool blues and greys of the snow and sky. The bare trees add a sense of depth and texture to the scene. The brushstrokes are loose and visible, creating a sense of movement and capturing the ephemeral quality of light on a winter day. The overall effect is one of quiet beauty and serenity.
