A serene woodblock print by Hasui Kawase depicting a snow-covered shrine, featuring the artist's signature use of atmospheric light and colour.
Hasui Kawase produced this woodblock print in 1931, capturing a quiet winter scene at the Hinoeda Shrine. As a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, Kawase sought to modernise traditional Japanese printmaking by incorporating Western techniques of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective. This work demonstrates his ability to render the specific quality of falling snow, which softens the architectural lines of the shrine and mutes the surrounding forest.
The composition is anchored by the bright red lacquer of the shrine gate, which provides a sharp contrast against the white snow and the dark, muted tones of the trees. Two figures stand in the foreground, holding umbrellas that add small splashes of colour to the otherwise monochromatic palette. The print relies on subtle gradations of grey and white to suggest the depth of the snowfall, while the precise carving of the woodblock preserves the texture of the wooden structures and the pine needles.
Kawase travelled extensively throughout Japan to sketch locations from life, often focusing on the interplay between nature and human architecture. His approach to printmaking involved a collaborative process with skilled carvers and printers, ensuring that the final output maintained the delicate nuances of his original watercolours. This particular image reflects his interest in the changing seasons and the specific mood of a location under inclement weather. The print remains a representative example of his technical precision and his focus on the quiet, observational aspects of Japanese life during the early twentieth century.
