A snow-covered road in Argenteuil is depicted in soft, diffused light, typical of a winter day. This landscape captures the subtle variations in tone and texture created by the snow.
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a founder of French Impressionism and its most consistent practitioner. His approach, emphasising the fleeting effects of light and colour, is evident in this snow scene. Monet lived in Argenteuil, a suburb of Paris, from 1874 to 1878. During this period, he painted numerous scenes of the town and its surroundings, including several winter views. This painting depicts a snow-covered road leading through Argenteuil. The scene is bathed in soft, diffused light, typical of a winter day. The bare trees and buildings are rendered with delicate brushstrokes, capturing the subtle variations in tone and texture created by the snow. Figures are sparsely placed along the road, adding a sense of scale and human presence to the wintry setting. The colour palette is dominated by whites, blues, and greys, with touches of red and brown in the buildings and bare branches. The overall effect is one of quiet serenity and atmospheric realism, characteristic of Monet's Impressionistic style.
