This hanging scroll by Kanô Tsunenobu displays the characteristic restraint of the Kanô school, which dominated Japanese official painting for centuries. The composition centres on a scholar figure, rendered with precise, fluid brushwork, standing beneath a pine tree. A crane, a traditional symbol of longevity and wisdom, accompanies the figure, creating a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. The Kanô school combined the techniques of Chinese ink painting with the decorative requirements of the Japanese shogunate. Tsunenobu, a member of the main line of the Kanô family, was a prolific painter who maintained the stylistic rigour of his predecessors while adapting to the tastes of the Edo period. His work often features balanced compositions where negative space plays an active role in defining the scene.
