A classic Victorian colour print by George Baxter, depicting a child enjoying a meal in a domestic setting.
George Baxter, a pioneer of colour printing in the nineteenth century, developed a method that combined an intaglio steel plate with multiple wood blocks to achieve a painterly effect. This work, titled So Nice!, captures a domestic scene typical of the Victorian era. It depicts a young child standing beside a wooden chair, pausing to eat from a steaming bowl. The composition focuses on the child's expression, which conveys a sense of simple contentment.
Baxter prints were produced to bring art into the homes of the middle class, offering an affordable alternative to oil paintings. The technical process involved layering colours to build depth and tone, resulting in a finish that mimics the appearance of a watercolour or oil study. The lighting in this piece is directed toward the child, creating a contrast against the darker background of the room. Details such as the earthenware jug on the floor and the bellows hanging on the wall add to the narrative of a modest household setting.
As a master of his craft, Baxter utilised his patented process to ensure consistent quality across his editions. This print reflects the period's interest in sentimental genre subjects, which often celebrated childhood and domestic life. The soft application of colour and the precise registration of the wood blocks demonstrate the technical rigour required for this medium. The image remains a clear example of the commercial and artistic success Baxter achieved during his career in London, where he operated his printing business for several decades.
