Painted in 1935, Soft Roughness (Douceur rugueuse) represents the later period of Wassily Kandinsky's career, during his time in Paris. By this stage, his visual language had shifted from the fluid, expressive forms of his earlier years toward a more structured, geometric approach. The composition features two primary rectangular forms that dominate the space, set against a deep, earthy red background.

The work is notable for its physical texture. Kandinsky incorporated sand into the paint, a technique that creates the tactile quality suggested by the title. This addition of grit provides a contrast to the precise, clean lines of the geometric shapes. The left rectangle, rendered in a pale, mottled cream, contains a series of horizontal bars and a singular circular element, while the right section, in shades of muted pink, displays a jagged edge and a trio of small squares.
