A detailed seventeenth-century drawing depicting soldiers resting outside a tavern, rendered in pen and ink with grey wash.
This drawing by Jan Martens de Jonge, dated 1637, captures a common scene from the Dutch Golden Age: soldiers resting outside a tavern. The composition is organised around a group of figures engaged in leisure, with some playing cards atop a drum while others remain mounted on their horses. The artist employs a delicate use of pen and brown ink, supplemented by grey wash, to define the forms and create a sense of atmosphere in the open air.
The scene reflects the military presence that was a frequent subject for artists of the period. The figures are depicted with attention to their period attire, including wide-brimmed hats and heavy cloaks, which were typical of the mid-seventeenth century. To the left, a makeshift structure serves as the inn, with a flag hanging from its roof, providing a sense of place. A lone soldier walks towards the right, carrying a long pike and a pack, which adds a narrative element of movement to the otherwise static group.
Martens de Jonge demonstrates a clear command of line and shadow. The wash is applied with restraint, allowing the white of the paper to suggest the bright, clear light of the day. The background remains sparse, with a faint suggestion of a town silhouette in the distance, which keeps the focus on the primary subjects. This work is a fine example of the genre drawings produced in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century, where everyday life, whether military or civilian, was documented with precision and technical skill. The drawing is signed and dated in the lower left corner, confirming its provenance within the artist's body of work.
