A classic etching from the 'Figurine' series by Salvator Rosa, depicting a soldier in a relaxed pose with a spear.
This etching belongs to the series 'Figurine', a collection of sixty-two prints by the Neapolitan artist Salvator Rosa. The work depicts a solitary soldier in a relaxed, contemplative posture, resting his weight against a long spear. Rosa, known for his rebellious spirit and his contributions to the Baroque style, utilised the etching medium to capture the spontaneity of his sketches. The figure is rendered with confident, economical lines that define the folds of the costume and the texture of the armour.
The soldier wears a plumed helmet, his head turned away from the viewer, which adds a sense of mystery to the composition. Rosa avoids excessive detail in the background, opting instead for a sparse, open space that directs the focus entirely onto the silhouette of the man. The cross-hatching techniques employed here demonstrate the technical proficiency Rosa brought to his printmaking practice. This series was widely circulated during the seventeenth century and influenced many artists who admired his ability to convey character through simple, gestural marks.
As a printmaker, Rosa was interested in the expressive potential of the line. He often depicted figures from the fringes of society, such as soldiers, beggars, and philosophers, rather than the traditional subjects of religious or mythological art. This print is a fine example of his approach to the human form, where the posture and the tilt of the head communicate a specific mood. The work remains a clear representation of the artist's interest in the 'capriccio' style, where the subject is treated with a sense of freedom and individual interpretation. The print is marked with the artist's monogram, a common feature in his graphic work, confirming its place within his wider catalogue of etchings.
