A 1880 etching by Mary Nimmo Moran, capturing a quiet, wooded scene through expressive, rhythmic line work.
Mary Nimmo Moran produced this etching in 1880, a period when the Etching Revival movement gained momentum in the United States. Moran, who learned the technique from her husband Thomas Moran, developed a distinct approach to the medium. She favoured direct observation and spontaneous mark-making, often working outdoors to capture the immediate qualities of the American environment.
In this work, the artist employs a series of varied lines to define the verticality of the trees against a quiet, reflective pool. The composition relies on the contrast between the dense, dark foliage and the lighter, open areas of the sky and water. Her technique involves short, rhythmic strokes that suggest the texture of bark and the movement of grasses. The scene conveys a sense of stillness, focusing on the quiet observation of a wooded area rather than a grand or dramatic vista.
Moran was one of the few women of her time to achieve recognition as a professional etcher. Her work often features the coastal areas of Long Island and the marshes of East Hampton. This print demonstrates her ability to manipulate the copper plate to create atmospheric depth through line weight alone. The absence of heavy shading allows the structure of the trees to remain the primary focus of the viewer. By avoiding excessive detail, she maintains a sense of immediacy and freshness in the final impression. This piece remains a clear example of her technical proficiency and her preference for natural, unadorned subjects.
