A haunting Symbolist work by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, featuring a stark geometric form looming over architectural ruins in a muted, atmospheric setting.
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a Lithuanian composer and painter, created this work during a period of intense creative output. The composition features a stark, dark, triangular form that dominates the upper left quadrant, cutting across the frame like a jagged shadow or an abstract monolith. Below this imposing shape, the skeletal remains of architectural ruins emerge from a hazy, muted background. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft greys, muted browns, and deep blacks to establish a sense of stillness and isolation.
Čiurlionis often integrated musical concepts into his visual art, frequently titling his works after musical forms. While this piece is titled Sorrow (II), it avoids literal representation, opting instead for an atmospheric approach that prioritises mood over narrative detail. The contrast between the sharp, geometric wedge and the crumbling, organic textures of the ruins creates a visual tension. The sky, rendered in washes of grey, provides little relief, reinforcing the sombre character of the scene. This work reflects the broader Symbolist interest in the internal state of the artist, using landscape elements to externalise abstract emotions. The lack of human figures encourages the viewer to engage directly with the architectural and geometric forms, which function as metaphors for decay and permanence. The application of tempera allows for a matte finish, which softens the edges of the ruins and integrates them into the surrounding mist. This piece is representative of the artist's ability to bridge the gap between visual art and musical composition, treating the canvas as a space for rhythmic arrangement and tonal variation.
