Description
Souter Lighthouse on the South Tyneside coast stands above green grass and blue sea, with red bands, white cottages and distant pale cliffs beneath the high bright clouds of summer.
Midway between the Tyne and Wear, this coastal station opened in 1871 to warn shipping of Whitburn Steel's dangerous rocks. Designed from the outset for electric light, it marked an important technological advance before its decommissioning in 1988 after 117 years of service.
At Souter Lighthouse, a red lantern and broad red band interrupt the white tower. Keepers' cottages extend to the left, opposite a small white building with black foghorns near the sea. Green grass and low shrubs cover the foreground slope. Pale cliffs recede along the blue coastline beneath high white cloud, with strong sun suggesting a clear midsummer afternoon.
