Description
South Foreland watches Kent's chalk coast from a white lighthouse, with green slopes and turquoise sea placing this pioneering maritime landmark above the curves of the Channel shore.
Near St Margaret's Bay in Kent, South Foreland's Victorian lighthouse warned ships approaching the Goodwin Sands. It became the first lighthouse to use electric light and later hosted pioneering radio experiments, including ship-to-shore and international transmissions that helped change maritime communication.
A white tower with diamond-patterned lantern glazing stands above a broad green lawn. Low keeper's buildings spread to either side, their dark chimneys contrasting with pale walls. Beyond, chalk cliffs curl around blue-green water towards the right. Full foliage and strong daylight suggest midsummer, with the tower's clean silhouette standing clearly against scattered white clouds and an expansive blue sky.
