A 1964 Color Field painting by Helen Frankenthaler, featuring expansive golden-yellow tones and fluid, stained colour washes.
Southern Exposure, produced in 1964, is a representative example of Helen Frankenthaler's approach to the soak-stain technique. By thinning her paint with turpentine or water, she allowed the pigment to permeate the raw canvas rather than sitting on the surface. This method creates a fusion of colour and support, where the paint becomes part of the fabric itself. The composition is defined by large, open areas of warm, golden-yellow tones that suggest a sense of light and atmosphere.
In the upper section, a horizontal band of magenta and deep violet introduces a contrast to the expansive yellow field. These forms appear to bleed into the canvas, demonstrating the fluid nature of her application. At the base of the work, a thin, horizontal line of green and red pigment provides a grounding element, suggesting a horizon line without resorting to literal representation. The work avoids dense layering, opting instead for transparency and the interaction of thin washes of colour.
Frankenthaler was a figure in the transition from the gestural style of early Abstract Expressionism to the more controlled, meditative qualities of Color Field painting. Her work focuses on the physical properties of the medium and the relationship between colour and space. By removing the brushstroke as a record of the artist's hand, she allows the viewer to engage directly with the chromatic field. This piece demonstrates her ability to balance large, empty spaces with subtle, concentrated areas of pigment, creating a sense of equilibrium. The lack of traditional perspective or narrative content encourages an experience based on the visual impact of the hues and their spatial arrangement on the flat surface of the canvas.
