Description
Southwell in Nottinghamshire is centred on its great minster, where Norman towers and later Gothic forms rise above trees, seen here beyond a lawn in the warm colours of evening.
Southwell occupies a shallow basin opening towards the Trent Valley in Nottinghamshire. Work on the present minster began in 1108, with later Gothic additions enriching the Norman church; in 1884 it became the cathedral for a newly established diocese.
Two steep-roofed towers rise on the right, balanced by a square central tower and lower pointed gables. Warm stone catches peach light above dense trees. A broad lawn fills the foreground, crossed by long shadows beneath dark overhanging leaves. Full crowns suggest summer, while mauve clouds and golden sky give the minster and distant countryside a quiet evening setting.
