A detailed nineteenth-century lithograph by Eugène Louis Lami, capturing the varied experiences of passengers aboard a cross-channel packet boat.
Eugène Louis Lami was a French painter and lithographer known for his keen observation of social customs and fashion. This work, part of his 'Souvenirs of London' series, captures the experience of cross-channel travel during the early nineteenth century. The scene depicts passengers on the deck of a packet boat, a common mode of transport between France and England at the time.
Lami employs a light, observational touch to document the varied states of the travellers. Some figures appear composed, while others show the physical toll of the sea voyage. The composition focuses on the deck, where individuals are grouped in informal clusters. The artist uses a muted palette, typical of the lithographic techniques of the period, with subtle hand-applied colour to define the clothing and accessories of the passengers. The inclusion of top hats, umbrellas, and heavy coats provides a specific sense of period fashion and social status.
As a chronicler of his era, Lami provides a window into the realities of travel before the advent of modern steamships. The work functions as a visual diary, documenting the mundane yet distinct moments of a journey. The technical execution, involving fine lines and delicate shading, reflects the standard of lithography produced by the Villain workshop in Paris. This print offers a glimpse into the cultural exchange between Britain and France, capturing the shared experience of those navigating the English Channel. The work remains a valuable record of nineteenth-century social history, presented with the characteristic wit and precision of Lami's draughtsmanship.
