A sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting a Spanish rider and a picador, showcasing historical military and equestrian costume.
This print by Abraham de Bruyn depicts two distinct equestrian figures, reflecting the interest in costume and military dress prevalent in the late sixteenth century. De Bruyn, a Flemish engraver and publisher based in Antwerp, produced numerous series documenting the attire of various nations and social classes. These works functioned as visual records for contemporaries, providing information on the specific garments worn by soldiers and nobility across Europe.
The left figure is identified as a Spanish rider, wearing a distinctive conical helmet and a heavy, pleated cloak that drapes over the horse. The right figure, a picador, is shown in a more active pose, holding a lance. The composition is typical of de Bruyn's costume books, where figures are presented in isolation against a plain background to ensure the details of the clothing remain the primary focus. The engraving technique employs fine, controlled lines to define the textures of the fabric and the musculature of the horses.
This particular impression shows signs of age, including paper loss and mounting marks, which are common in prints of this era that were once part of larger bound volumes or albums. The Latin and vernacular inscriptions at the base of the figures provide context, identifying the subjects for the viewer. As a document of historical fashion, the work offers a glimpse into the sartorial conventions of the period. The clarity of the line work and the systematic approach to the subject matter are characteristic of the printmaking traditions in the Low Countries during the late Renaissance, where the production of such series was a significant commercial activity for artists and publishers alike.
