A delicate ink and colour painting on silk depicting a ceramic jar with lit sparklers and a traditional fan, capturing the quiet atmosphere of a summer evening.
Shiokawa Bunrin, a prominent figure of the Kyoto-based Maruyama-Shijo school, captures a quiet, ephemeral moment in this hanging scroll. The composition focuses on a simple ceramic jar containing lit sparklers, accompanied by a traditional uchiwa fan resting on the ground. The scene evokes the atmosphere of a Japanese summer evening, where the cooling air is punctuated by the brief, glowing trails of light from the handheld fireworks.
Bunrin employs a subtle gradation of ink tones to suggest the dim light of dusk. The background fades from a lighter upper register to a darker lower section, grounding the objects in a soft, ambient gloom. The sparklers themselves are rendered with delicate, precise strokes, their faint smoke drifting upwards in the still air. The uchiwa fan, a common accessory for summer heat, provides a horizontal counterpoint to the verticality of the jar and the glowing embers.
This work reflects the artist's interest in naturalistic observation, a hallmark of the Shijo style. Rather than relying on rigid, traditional iconography, Bunrin observes the domestic details of daily life with a refined, understated sensibility. The silk support adds a gentle texture to the ink washes, softening the edges of the forms and contributing to the overall sense of transience. The inclusion of the fan and the sparklers creates a narrative of seasonal leisure, inviting the viewer to pause and consider the fleeting nature of the summer season. The work remains a fine example of late Edo and early Meiji period aesthetics, where the focus shifted towards capturing the quiet beauty found in ordinary objects and seasonal customs.
