Description
Spean Bridge in Highland Lochaber places three bronze commandos above green fields and broad blue mountains, with pale village roofs below the stone memorial in warm light on a late summer afternoon.
Spean Bridge occupies the Great Glen in Lochaber, taking its name from General Wade’s Highbridge over the River Spean. The nearby Commando Memorial overlooks the training country associated with Achnacarry. It honours the original British Commandos raised during the Second World War, whose training centre opened there in 1942.
Three bronze soldiers stand on a tall stepped stone pedestal above a circle of pale paving. Beyond them, green fields and leafy tree belts surround small white village houses. Broad blue mountain shoulders carry warm gold highlights, beneath high cream clouds. Yellow flowering shrubs fill the lower edge, suggesting late summer sunshine with long shadows stretching from the memorial across the grass.
