A refined Japanese surimono woodblock print by Ushinaga, featuring a minimalist toy monkey accompanied by elegant calligraphy.
This print by the Japanese artist Ushinaga belongs to the genre of surimono, a form of privately commissioned woodblock print. Unlike commercial ukiyo-e prints intended for mass distribution, surimono were produced for small circles of poets and connoisseurs. They often combined sophisticated calligraphy with refined imagery, frequently celebrating seasonal events or literary themes.
The composition features a minimalist depiction of a toy monkey, rendered with soft, muted tones and delicate outlines. The figure is positioned at the base of the paper, allowing the surrounding space to be occupied by columns of elegant Japanese script. This arrangement emphasises the relationship between the visual subject and the poetic text, a hallmark of the surimono tradition. The presence of a red seal, or hanko, provides a formal mark of authenticity and artistic identity, typical of the period's printmaking practices.
The monkey, a recurring motif in Japanese folklore and art, is depicted here with a sense of quiet simplicity. The artist employs a restrained palette, focusing on the subtle gradations of the monkey's form rather than bold or saturated colours. This approach creates a sense of balance, where the negative space of the paper acts as a compositional element. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where technical precision in woodblock carving and printing allowed for such nuanced, understated results. As a piece of ephemera, this print offers a glimpse into the private artistic exchanges of the time, where the interplay of word and image was highly prized by the literati. The print remains a fine example of the technical and artistic standards maintained by Japanese printmakers during this era.
