A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Cornelis van der Sys depicting the daily operations of a Dutch pin-making workshop.
This etching, titled Speldenmaaksters, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf, a collection documenting various trades and crafts of the late seventeenth-century Netherlands. Cornelis van der Sys provides a detailed view into the workshop of pin makers, capturing the manual labour involved in this specific industry. The composition is divided into distinct zones: in the foreground, two women sit on stools, their hands occupied with the precise assembly of pins. Their posture suggests a repetitive, disciplined workflow. In the background, other figures continue their tasks, providing a sense of the busy environment typical of such small-scale manufacturing units.
The print is characteristic of the period's interest in documenting everyday life and the mechanics of production. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the textures of the clothing, the wooden furniture, and the architectural elements of the workshop. Through the open doorway, a glimpse of a townscape adds depth to the scene, connecting the interior workspace with the broader urban context. The inclusion of text above and below the image serves both as a title and a moralising verse, a common feature in Dutch prints of this era. These verses often linked the physical act of labour to broader philosophical or religious observations. The work offers a clear, unadorned look at the realities of seventeenth-century craft, free from the idealisation found in other genres of the time. It remains a valuable historical record of the tools, techniques, and social organisation of early modern Dutch industry.
