A detailed ink and wash drawing by Caspar Luyken documenting a mock naval battle held in honour of the Grand Embassy of Peter the Great in 1697.
This drawing by Caspar Luyken depicts a mock naval battle, or spiegelgevecht, staged on the water. The event was organised to honour the arrival of the Grand Embassy of Peter the Great in the Netherlands in 1697. Luyken, a prolific Dutch illustrator and engraver, captures the spectacle with a focus on the movement of the vessels and the atmospheric effects of cannon fire.
The composition is filled with numerous ships, their masts and sails creating a dense vertical rhythm across the paper. Luyken uses grey wash to define the billowing smoke from the cannons, which obscures parts of the fleet and adds a sense of depth to the scene. In the foreground, smaller boats are crowded with spectators, their figures rendered with quick, economical strokes. The artist balances the chaotic energy of the mock battle with the structured arrangement of the ships, providing a clear view of the event's scale.
Technically, the work demonstrates the artist's ability to manage complex scenes through line and tone. The pen work provides the necessary detail for the rigging and hull structures, while the wash creates the soft, hazy quality of the maritime environment. This drawing functions as a historical record of the diplomatic pageantry that occurred during the Tsar's visit. It reflects the Dutch fascination with naval power and public displays during the late seventeenth century. The work remains a fine example of the illustrative style prevalent in the Netherlands at the time, where artists documented both daily life and significant political occurrences for a wider audience.
