Description
A dynamic gouache painting by Alexander Calder featuring a central spiral motif and bold primary colours.
Alexander Calder, known primarily for his kinetic sculptures and mobiles, produced a significant body of two-dimensional work throughout his career. This piece, executed in gouache, demonstrates his characteristic approach to colour and form. The composition is dominated by a central spiral, a recurring motif in his visual vocabulary, which suggests movement and cosmic energy. The circular form is surrounded by concentric bands of orange and red, creating a sense of radiation or expansion against the blue background.
To the left, a large, crescent-like yellow shape provides a strong vertical counterpoint to the circular centre. This form is punctuated by dark, irregular spots, which add a rhythmic quality to the surface. The application of paint is direct and unadorned, allowing the paper texture to remain visible in certain areas. The contrast between the primary colours—yellow, red, and blue—is typical of Calder's later works on paper, where he often explored the interaction of geometric shapes and organic lines.
While Calder is often associated with the physical balance of his mobiles, his paintings and drawings reveal a similar preoccupation with equilibrium. The placement of the dark circles in the upper right corner balances the weight of the yellow crescent, ensuring the composition remains stable despite the dynamic nature of the spiral. This work reflects his ability to distil complex ideas into simple, graphic elements. It is a clear example of his late-career style, where he embraced a more spontaneous and expressive application of medium. The work retains a sense of playfulness, a quality that defines much of his output, while maintaining a rigorous structural logic.
