A quiet scene of three women gardening in a Greenwich Village backyard, painted by American artist John French Sloan in 1913.
John French Sloan, a member of the Ashcan School, captured the quiet rhythms of urban life in early twentieth-century New York. In this work, he depicts a small, enclosed backyard garden in Greenwich Village. Three women occupy the space: one kneels to plant, another stands with a rake, and a third sits nearby, observing the activity. The scene is framed by a wooden fence, beyond which laundry hangs on lines against the backdrop of brick tenement buildings.
Sloan utilised a soft, naturalistic palette to convey the atmosphere of a spring day. The light is diffused, casting gentle shadows across the soil and the figures. His brushwork is fluid, focusing on the human interaction within the private, domestic sphere of the city. Unlike the more chaotic street scenes often associated with the Ashcan School, this painting offers a moment of stillness. It documents the social character of the neighbourhood, where private courtyards provided a necessary respite from the density of the surrounding urban environment. The inclusion of everyday details, such as the laundry and the simple gardening tools, grounds the composition in the reality of the period. Sloan's approach to the subject remains observational, avoiding sentimentality while documenting the specific social fabric of the Village during this era.
