Spring Sunrise at Mount Penglai - Tanomura Chokunyū

Tanomura Chokunyū, a prominent figure in the late Edo and Meiji period Bunjinga tradition, produced this work in 1889. The painting depicts the mythical Mount Penglai, a legendary island of immortality in Chinese and Japanese folklore. The composition follows the vertical hanging scroll format, common in East Asian ink painting, allowing for a tiered progression from the foreground architecture to the distant, mist-shrouded peaks.

The foreground features a complex of buildings nestled among pine trees and weeping willows, rendered with precise brushwork. A small bridge crosses a stream, where figures are depicted in miniature, providing a sense of scale against the towering mountains. The mid-ground reveals a waterfall cascading through rocky terrain, leading the eye upward toward the summit. A small, red sun hangs in the upper left, indicating the dawn. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft greens, ochres, and muted earth tones, which are characteristic of the literati style that prioritised scholarly expression over decorative excess.

Chokunyū was a student of Tanomura Chikuden and maintained the intellectual rigour associated with the Bunjinga school. His work often synthesised traditional Chinese techniques with Japanese sensibilities. The calligraphy in the upper left corner provides context for the scene, linking the visual imagery to classical literary themes of seclusion and spiritual retreat. The silk support has aged to a warm, neutral tone, which complements the subtle application of mineral pigments. This piece demonstrates the technical control and thematic depth typical of Chokunyū's later career, reflecting his mastery of the brush and his deep engagement with the classical canon of East Asian art.
