A geometric abstract composition by Victor Pasmore, featuring a grid of squares and triangles in muted tones against a dark green background.
Victor Pasmore was a central figure in the development of British abstract art. Initially known for his lyrical, figurative paintings, he underwent a radical shift towards geometric abstraction during the late 1940s. This work reflects his transition into the Constructivist tradition, where the focus moves away from representation towards the arrangement of pure form, line, and colour.
The composition is built upon a grid, a recurring device in Pasmore's mid-century output. He uses a series of squares and triangles to create a sense of order against a deep, dark green field. The palette is restrained, relying on muted lilac, grey, and earthy tones to balance the primary structure. The application of paint is deliberate, with clean edges defining the geometric shapes. These forms appear to float or shift across the surface, suggesting a spatial depth that contradicts the flatness of the canvas.
Pasmore's interest in the relationship between art and architecture is evident here. He treats the canvas as a space to be organised rather than a window to be looked through. The small, scattered white marks across the right side of the composition introduce a sense of movement, breaking the rigidity of the grid. This piece captures the artist's analytical approach to visual language, where the interaction of simple shapes creates a balanced, rhythmic experience for the viewer. His work from this period remains a primary example of how British artists engaged with international modernism, stripping away narrative to explore the fundamental properties of visual perception.
