A Baroque painting by Jusepe de Ribera depicting St. Bruno kneeling in prayer, attended by angels. The work exemplifies Ribera's tenebrist style and his focus on religious subjects.
Jusepe de Ribera, a leading Spanish painter and printmaker of the Baroque period, is known for his tenebrist style and dramatic compositions. Born in Spain, he spent most of his career in Naples, then part of the Spanish Empire, where he was known as Lo Spagnoletto (the Little Spaniard). His work often depicts religious subjects, mythological scenes, and portraits, characterised by strong contrasts of light and shadow and a naturalistic approach to the human form. Ribera's influence can be seen in the works of later artists, particularly those who embraced the Baroque style. In this oil on canvas, St. Bruno is depicted kneeling in prayer, his gaze directed upwards towards two cherubic angels presenting him with a book. The saint is clad in the white habit of the Carthusian order, his hands clasped in supplication. A skull and crucifix rest on a stone ledge beside him, symbols of mortality and faith. The background features a rocky landscape and a cloudy sky, rendered in muted tones. The overall composition is characterised by a sense of piety and contemplation, typical of Ribera's religious paintings.
