Description
St Cyrus National Nature Reserve protects a sandy stretch of southern Aberdeenshire, where old volcanic cliffs shelter dunes and flower rich grassland beside the North Sea near Montrose.
Just north of Montrose, the reserve lies at the mouth of the North Esk. Volcanic cliffs and a ridge of dunes protect its grasslands from coastal winds, creating conditions for numerous flowering plants, including species close to the northern limits of their British range.
St Cyrus National Nature Reserve is seen from the steep grassy hillside, looking along an immense pale beach beside calm blue water. Low buildings and sandy paths sit on the flatter ground below, with scrub scattered across yellow green turf. Distant hills soften into blue haze. The bright sky and open grassland suggest summer along this sheltered coastal strip.
