A scene from the life of Saint Francis, showing a humble man spreading his cloak for the saint, painted by Giotto in the late thirteenth century.
This work is part of the celebrated cycle of frescoes depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, located within the Upper Church of the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi. Attributed to Giotto di Bondone, the scene illustrates a specific episode from the saint's life: a humble man spreads his cloak upon the ground to honour Francis as he passes by.
The composition demonstrates the shift away from the rigid, stylised forms of the Byzantine tradition toward a more humanistic approach. Giotto employs a clear, architectural setting that provides a sense of physical space, allowing the figures to occupy a three-dimensional environment. The figures are rendered with a focus on volume and weight, their drapery falling in naturalistic folds that suggest the presence of the body beneath the fabric.
Saint Francis is positioned to the left, his form defined by a simple, dark habit and a golden halo. Opposite him, the simple man kneels, his gesture of reverence captured with directness. The architectural elements, including the portico and the tower, are depicted with an early attempt at perspective, grounding the narrative in a recognisable, earthly realm. The palette is dominated by the characteristic blue of the sky, which contrasts with the muted earth tones of the buildings and the garments of the onlookers. This fresco cycle is widely studied for its narrative clarity and the emotional engagement of the figures, which marked a departure from the artistic conventions of the late thirteenth century. The focus remains on the interaction between the individuals, conveying the humility and devotion central to the Franciscan narrative.
