A fresco from the life of Saint Francis cycle in Assisi, depicting the saint praying for water to emerge from a rock.
The Miracle of the Spring is a fresco located within the Upper Church of San Francesco in Assisi. It forms part of the cycle depicting the life of Saint Francis. The scene illustrates a moment where the saint, exhausted and thirsty during a journey, prays for water. His prayer results in a spring appearing from the rock, allowing his companion to drink.
Giotto employs a clear narrative structure. Saint Francis occupies the centre, kneeling with hands raised in supplication. His posture conveys a sense of physical weight and emotional focus. To the right, a companion leans forward to drink from the newly formed water source. On the left, two other figures stand with a mule, providing a sense of scale and grounding the scene in a recognisable, albeit stylised, reality. The rocky terrain is rendered with simplified, geometric forms, which was a departure from the flatter, more symbolic representations common in the preceding Byzantine tradition.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones of brown, ochre, and grey, set against a dark, atmospheric sky. This choice directs attention to the figures and their interaction with the environment. The composition balances the verticality of the rocky outcrops with the horizontal movement of the figures. Giotto uses light and shadow to model the forms of the monks, giving them a three-dimensional presence that was revolutionary for the period. The trees perched atop the crags add a sense of depth to the background, suggesting a wider world beyond the immediate event. This work demonstrates the shift towards humanism in art, where religious figures are depicted with tangible physical presence and relatable human needs.
