On the right, Saint Francis stands partially disrobed, his gaze directed upward toward a divine hand emerging from the heavens. He is supported by the Bishop of Assisi, who attempts to cover the saint with his own mantle.

On the left, the figure of Pietro di Bernardone, the father of Francis, is shown in a state of visible agitation. He is restrained by a companion, his posture conveying anger and disbelief at his son's rejection of his inheritance and worldly status. The architectural elements frame the scene, providing a sense of spatial depth that was innovative for the period. Giotto employs a clear, legible style, focusing on the psychological tension between the figures rather than ornate detail. The colour palette is composed of earthy tones, including ochre, terracotta, and muted blues, which ground the scene in a tangible reality.
