A classic fresco scene by Giotto depicting Saint Francis rejecting his worldly inheritance, characterised by clear narrative focus and humanistic expression.
This fresco is part of the cycle depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, located in the Upper Church of the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi. Giotto presents a narrative split into two distinct groups, separated by a central void that draws the eye to the dramatic action. On the right, Saint Francis stands partially disrobed, his gaze directed upward toward a divine hand emerging from the heavens. He is supported by the Bishop of Assisi, who attempts to cover the saint with his own mantle.
On the left, the figure of Pietro di Bernardone, the father of Francis, is shown in a state of visible agitation. He is restrained by a companion, his posture conveying anger and disbelief at his son's rejection of his inheritance and worldly status. The architectural elements frame the scene, providing a sense of spatial depth that was innovative for the period. Giotto employs a clear, legible style, focusing on the psychological tension between the figures rather than ornate detail. The colour palette is composed of earthy tones, including ochre, terracotta, and muted blues, which ground the scene in a tangible reality.
This work demonstrates a shift away from the rigid conventions of Byzantine art, moving toward a more humanistic approach to religious storytelling. The figures possess a weight and volume that suggest physical presence, while their expressions and gestures communicate the emotional gravity of the event. By stripping away unnecessary ornamentation, Giotto directs the viewer to the core conflict of the narrative: the choice between material wealth and spiritual devotion. This print captures the clarity of the original composition, allowing for an appreciation of the artist's early mastery of perspective and human drama.
