A detailed narrative scene by Vittore Carpaccio, depicting the baptism of the King and Queen of Silene within an exotic, Venetian-inspired setting.
Vittore Carpaccio, a Venetian master of the early Renaissance, produced this work as part of a cycle for the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni in Venice. The painting depicts the baptism of the King and Queen of Silene, a narrative episode from the legend of Saint George. Carpaccio organises the scene with a focus on theatrical staging, placing the central religious act on a raised platform to the right, while the left side is occupied by a procession of musicians and observers.
The composition reflects the Venetian fascination with the exotic. Carpaccio incorporates architectural elements that blend classical forms with Eastern influences, such as the domed structure in the background. The figures are dressed in elaborate, colourful garments, including turbans and patterned robes, which suggest the cosmopolitan nature of Venice at the turn of the sixteenth century. The artist pays close attention to the textures of the fabrics and the specific details of the musical instruments, such as the large drum and the brass horns.
In the foreground, the presence of a greyhound and a parrot adds a layer of naturalistic detail common in Carpaccio's work. The lighting is even, allowing for a clear view of the various groups of people gathered in the square. The perspective is constructed to guide the eye across the breadth of the scene, from the musicians on the left to the solemn ritual of baptism on the right. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to combine religious iconography with the observation of contemporary life, creating a narrative that feels both historical and immediate. The painting remains in its original location in Venice, providing a rare example of a Renaissance cycle preserved in its intended architectural context.
