A 1940 oil painting by Giorgio de Chirico, depicting the legend of Saint George alongside a contemplative female figure in a surreal, dreamlike setting.
Giorgio de Chirico, a central figure in the development of Metaphysical Art, produced this work in 1940. The composition presents a curious juxtaposition of classical mythology and the artist's characteristic dreamlike atmosphere. In the foreground, a seated female figure occupies a prominent position, draped in red fabric against a dark, velvet-like backdrop. Her presence is calm and detached, contrasting with the dramatic action occurring in the distance.
To the left, the narrative of Saint George and the dragon unfolds upon a desolate shoreline. The knight, clad in armour, sits atop a white horse, engaging the beast near the water's edge. De Chirico employs a distinct painterly technique here, moving away from his earlier, flatter Metaphysical style toward a more traditional, almost Baroque-inspired approach. The sky is filled with heavy, swirling clouds that suggest an impending storm, adding to the sense of unease that permeates the scene.
This work reflects the artist's later period, during which he frequently revisited classical themes and techniques. By placing the legendary combat in the background, de Chirico shifts the viewer's focus toward the contemplative figure in the foreground. The painting invites questions regarding the relationship between the heroic myth and the quiet, domestic reality of the woman. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, deep reds, and the stark white of the horse, creating a visual tension between the two halves of the canvas. This piece offers a unique insight into the artist's exploration of time, memory, and the persistence of classical motifs within a modern context.
