Description
St Helens in Merseyside follows a reflective canal between leafy green banks, with a distant bridge and warm cloud mirrored in the quiet blue water of a late summer afternoon.
Coal extraction and glassmaking helped turn this Lancashire settlement into an important industrial town. The Sankey Canal, opened in 1757, provided a route towards the Mersey and Liverpool, allowing coal and factory materials to move through the growing industrial district.
The canal at St Helens runs straight between low brick edges towards a dark bridge. A pale towpath follows the right bank beneath full green trees, opposite a large willow leaning over the water. Gold light catches the leaves and breaks into long reflections. Tall cream clouds fill the blue sky, suggesting a still afternoon near the end of summer.
